I need to vent and get some outside opinions because right now I don’t trust my own judgment. My husband, Mark, had an affair with a coworker named Denise that lasted almost three years. I only found out about it two months ago. What’s breaking me more than the affair itself is that his entire family knew, and none of them said a word to me.
How I Found Out
I found a receipt in Mark’s jacket pocket for a hotel in a city he told me he never visited for work. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted everything. Denise worked with him at his old job, and the affair started at a company retreat and continued on and off until last year, when she took a job somewhere else.
I asked him the obvious question: how did nobody notice? He got quiet, then said his mom found out about a year in, because Denise called the house looking for him once by mistake. His sister knew too. So did his brother.
Confronting the Family

I called my mother-in-law, Patricia, and asked her straight out if she knew. She didn’t deny it. She said she “didn’t want to get in the middle of our marriage” and figured it would eventually fizzle out on its own, which apparently to her meant it wasn’t her business to mention to me.
His sister, Rachel, gave me almost the same line. Word for word, actually, which makes me think they’d already talked about what to say if I ever asked.
Three years. Three years of holiday dinners, birthday parties, a trip we all took to the coast together, and every single one of them sat across from me knowing.
The Family Group Chat

After I found out, I left the family group chat without saying anything. Patricia texted me privately asking if everything was okay, like she genuinely didn’t understand why I’d be upset with her specifically. I told her the truth: that her son cheated on me for three years and she chose to protect that instead of me.
She responded that she loves both of us and didn’t want to “choose sides,” as if telling me the truth about my own marriage would have been picking a team instead of just being decent.
Rachel texted separately saying I was being unfair to blame the whole family for Mark’s mistake. Maybe that’s true for Mark’s brother, who says he only found out secondhand and never spoke to Denise directly. But Patricia and Rachel had years to say something and chose silence instead.
Where Things Stand Now
I’ve told Mark I’m not ready to decide anything about our marriage yet. That’s its own mess I’m working through separately. But I’ve made it clear to his family that I don’t want contact right now, not with his mom, not with his sister, maybe with his brother eventually.
My own mom thinks I’m punishing people for someone else’s affair. My sister thinks silence for three years is its own kind of betrayal, and honestly, I agree with her more.
Was I Wrong?

I keep going back and forth. Mark cheated, not his family. But I also can’t unsee three years of birthdays and holidays where they all knew something this big and let me keep showing up clueless. That doesn’t feel like staying out of it. That feels like choosing him over me, over and over, quietly.
So, AITAH? Was I wrong to cut off my in-laws over something my husband did, or is knowing and saying nothing for three years its own betrayal?
Drop your honest thoughts below. I could use them right now.
P.S. If you've ever found out someone close to you knew a painful truth and stayed silent, I'd like to hear how you handled it.
