I need outside opinions because my head is a mess right now. Six months after my divorce finalized, my best friend of twelve years, Monica, married my ex-husband, Derek. I found out through a wedding photo on Facebook. Not a phone call. Not a text. A photo, tagged, with seventy comments already on it by the time I saw it. So, blocking her everywhere and telling our entire friend group why? Here’s what happened.
How the Divorce Went

Derek and I split after four years of marriage. It wasn’t dramatic. We just wanted different things, he wanted kids right away and I wasn’t ready, and eventually the resentment built up until neither of us could stand living in the same house. We separated in January, the divorce was final by June. Monica was the one who helped me move my boxes out. She sat with me on my bathroom floor more than once. I trusted her with everything.
At no point during any of that did she mention feelings for Derek. Not once.
The Photo

I was scrolling my phone on a random Tuesday night and there it was. Monica in a white dress, Derek in a grey suit, some courthouse steps I didn’t recognize. Caption: “Six months of falling for my best friend. Mrs. Monica Hale now :)”
I read it maybe four times before it landed. Then I called her. She picked up on the second ring like she’d been waiting for it.
She told me it “just happened” after I moved out, that they bumped into each other at a mutual friend’s barbecue in March, started talking, and it turned into something neither of them expected. She said she didn’t tell me because she “didn’t want to hurt me” and figured I’d find out eventually and be fine with it since Derek and I were “already over.”
Why I Don’t Buy the Timeline
Here’s what bothers me. Monica and Derek were still messaging each other, according to a screenshot another friend sent me, back in February. That’s one month after I moved out. Not March. February. Which means either she lied about the barbecue story, or the barbecue wasn’t the start of anything, just the excuse she settled on.
I also remember, vaguely, mentioning to her in April that I thought Derek had been acting weirdly cagey when we talked about splitting up our old furniture. She just nodded along and told me I was probably overthinking it.
I don’t know. Maybe I am putting together a story that isn’t there. But it doesn’t feel like overthinking. It feels like I was talking to someone who already knew.
Telling the Group

Our friend group has been together since college, eleven of us in a group chat that’s been running for almost a decade. I posted the wedding photo in the chat with one line: “Just so everyone’s aware, Monica married Derek six months after our divorce and hid it from me the entire time.”
The chat exploded. A few people defended her, saying love doesn’t wait for a socially acceptable timeline. Most people were just as blindsided as I was. One friend, Priya, admitted Monica had asked her back in April to “keep something quiet” and Priya assumed it was about a job, not this.
Monica texted me that night calling me vindictive for “airing our business” to everyone instead of handling it privately.
Where Things Stand Now
I blocked her on everything. I’m not interested in a conversation where she explains her feelings to me like I’m supposed to nod along the way she nodded along to my divorce. Derek hasn’t reached out at all, which honestly tracks.
Some of our mutual friends think I overreacted by making it public instead of just quietly disappearing from her life. Others think going public was the least I could do after twelve years of friendship ended with a wedding announcement instead of an actual conversation.
I keep going back and forth on whether the group chat post was petty or fair. It felt fair in the moment. Now I’m not so sure it mattered either way, since nothing about what she did was going to feel okay no matter how I found out.
Your Verdict?

So, AITAH? Was I wrong to expose the timeline to our whole friend group, or was she wrong for marrying my ex in secret and letting me find out from Facebook? Would you have handled the friend group differently?
Tell me what you think. I still don’t fully trust my own read on this.
P.S. If you've ever lost a friendship to a betrayal like this, share your story. Sometimes it helps to know you're not the only one.
