I Found Text Messages Between My Fiancé and My Own Mother

Messages Between My Fiancé and My Own Mother — woman reading shocking text messages on a laptop, discovering a hidden family betrayal

I’ve read these messages probably thirty times now and I still feel a little sick about it. My fiancé, Ryan, and my mom, Diane, have apparently been talking behind my back for three weeks, and I only found out because he left his laptop open on the counter. AITAH for how I reacted? Genuinely not sure anymore.

The Discovery

Ryan went to shower and left his email open. I wasn’t going through his stuff, my mom’s name was just sitting right there in his inbox, which already felt wrong before I even opened anything. Eleven messages over three weeks. I read one, then I read all of them, standing at the counter in my socks.

Nothing romantic, so at least there’s that. But my mom had been telling him I was “too much like my father,” sending him articles about controlling personalities, and asking him not to mention any of it to me.

I ended up on the bathroom floor for a while before I said anything to anyone. My mom and I have never been simple. She and my dad divorced when I was twelve and she never fully let that go, and over the years she’s told me more than once that I have his temper.

She just decided the person to unload all of that onto was my fiancé. Not me.

Confronting Ryan

When he got out of the shower I put the laptop down in front of him and didn’t say a word. He went pale almost immediately. Said my mom reached out after our engagement party, said she was “worried” and wanted him to “know what he was getting into.” Said he barely responded and felt gross about the whole thing but couldn’t figure out how to bring it up.

I asked the obvious question. Why not just tell me. He said he didn’t want to be the reason things got worse between me and her.

Confronting My Mom

I called her the next day. She wasn’t sorry. She said she loves me, she was only trying to prepare Ryan, and that I was overreacting to a mother caring about her daughter’s marriage. I told her there’s a difference between caring and going behind my back for three weeks. She went quiet, then told me I was being dramatic, which is basically her answer to everything.

Ryan and I talked it through and I believe him, he didn’t ask for any of it and clearly didn’t know what to do with it once it started. My mom and I haven’t spoken since that phone call. My sister keeps saying “that’s just Mom being Mom” and I should let it go. My aunt thinks it’s a real betrayal and I’m allowed to be as upset as I am.

Honestly I flip between both of those opinions depending on the hour.

Your Verdict?

Was I wrong to shut my mom out over this, or was she wrong to go around me and talk to my fiancé for three weeks straight? Has anyone else had a parent try to insert themselves into their relationship like this? I could use some perspectives that aren’t my sister’s or my aunt’s.

P.S. If this sounds familiar, share it. Sometimes you need a stranger's honest take more than family's.
