When I explain this to friends about my how a roommate has been reading my texts, half of them laugh it off and half of them look at me like I should’ve left months ago. Here’s what’s actually going on.
The Living Situation

My boyfriend, Adrian, has shared an apartment with his college roommate, Felix, for six years across two different places. Adrian and I have been together a year and a half. Felix never really warmed up to me, and for a long time I assumed that was just normal roommate territorialism.
It’s become something else.
What’s Actually Happening

Whenever I text Adrian anything even mildly personal, Felix reads it over his shoulder and comments out loud, sometimes doing a voice for how he thinks I “sound.” Adrian usually laughs along instead of telling him to knock it off. Last month I texted Adrian something private about a rough day at work, and Felix read it back in a mocking tone while Adrian had me on speaker, in the room, listening to the whole thing happen live.
Bringing It Up With Adrian

I told him it made me deeply uncomfortable and asked him to keep his phone somewhere private when we’re texting about anything personal. He said Felix doesn’t mean anything by it and that I was taking a joke too seriously. When I pushed, he admitted it would be “awkward” to ask Felix to back off, since they’ve lived together so long, and that Felix has “always been like this with every girlfriend I’ve had.”
That last part is the one that’s stuck with me.
Talking to His Sister

Adrian’s sister, Bree, and I have gotten close over the past year, so I told her the whole thing hoping she’d tell me I was overreacting. She didn’t. She said Felix did something almost identical with Adrian’s last serious girlfriend, and that Adrian handled it the same way back then, laughing along instead of setting a boundary.
That pattern is what actually bothers me now, more than any single incident.
Where Things Stand

I told Adrian he needs to set a real boundary with Felix or start putting his phone away entirely when we’re talking about anything personal. He agreed on the surface. Two weeks later, nothing’s actually changed, including a comment Felix made last weekend about a picture I sent that I never meant for an audience of two.
I’m starting to wonder if the actual problem was ever Felix at all.
Your Verdict?
Am I being too rigid about a friendship dynamic I don’t fully understand, or is it reasonable to expect my boyfriend to protect our private conversations regardless of how long he and Felix have lived together? Would you stay in this?
I keep hoping it resolves on its own. I’m starting to think that’s wishful thinking.
